nursery on the cheap: decorating a cozy space for less

Our nursery is tiny. Really really tiny. A “cozy” nursery. Jay and I have been in the market for a house for a while now, and haven’t had any luck finding the “right” home for us. In the meantime, we have been renting a sweet little house in our favorite neighborhood. It has put us in a little pickle trying to plan for the future with our little girl.

When we were expecting, we didn’t know if we were having a boy or a girl. When the opportunities came, she just didn’t want to show us ..until she arrived last fall. Blue and pink weren’t really our thing anyway, so we had completely open minds when it came to making a sweet little “nook” for Anouk.

The second “bedroom” in our flat is so small that if we could fit a king size bed in the room (and that’s a big ‘if’) there might be a foot to spare on each side of it. There is a closet, and a staircase on the other side of the wall makes the room an odd shape. Our imaginations had to go to work.

Things we had to consider were 1) size 2) gender neutral and 3) not sinking too much money into a house we don’t own.

This is what we came up with!

The staircase made it an odd shaped space.

We used the actual closet to hold baby stuff, her clothes are on display.

We painted to room, bought shelving, a chair, and a rug from IKEA. We displayed her wardrobe to save space in her closet. The original lighting was really bad, so we splurged on a fixture that cleaned up the light quite a bit. All said and done, we spent around $300 for everything.
